A joint visit with Sligo Rotary Club was organised on Monday 29th May, 2017. Eighteen Rotarians from both Clubs visited the prison. The Prison Governor Eddie Mullins gave the group a guided tour of the site, visiting the flower tunnels, vegetable garden, coffee shop, education centre and finishing off with a tour of the Bicycle shed. The prison has a capacity for 140 prisoners, fourteen of whom are "lifers", at present they have 130 resident. The prisoners are encouraged to become involved in various projects as listed above, and in doing so, they gain qualifications which are of benefit to them on their release. The Bikes for Africa project which is supported by Rotary has processed 2,300 bicycles to date, with more bikes on sight for repair. The prison in open to visitors who are encouraged to come along and purchase the produce, have their car washed and have a coffee in the coffee shop. Following the tour, the group were treated to soup and sandwiches provided by the prisoners and staff of the canteen. President Kenny expressed his thanks to Governor Eddie for facilitating the visit, and wished him well in his new role as Governor of Cloverhill Prison in Dublin.
