At a recent meeting of Enniskillen Rotary Club Brian Keys Managing Director of Severfield N.I. Ltd presented a cheque for £7,500 which was part of the proceeds from the recent Fisher Cycle Challenge. This year the Rotary Club's main charity is the purchase of a new minibus for Willowbridge School. The Cycle Challenge raised a total of £17,500 from the event.
Back in 2013 the company decided to take on the cycle to work scheme, and as a follow up to this a charity cycle was organised in 2014, this raised £7,500 for charity. The cycle has now become an annual event, this year the event had an added attraction, the King/Queen of the Mountain. This was a sprint up the Lough Navar forest drive, a distance of 3.5 miles. The quickest time was 9.5 minutes for the men and 12 minutes for the ladies, trophies and a race jersey were presented to the winners. Over 200 cyclists took part in the cycle.
Julie Murphy Principal of Willowbridge School gave a short outline on the need for a new minibus. Willowbridge is a special school for special people - where we see ability, not disability. The school has the same curriculum as main stream schools, including GCSE's, and it also has a close link with other local schools. The bus will be used to bring students on work placement visits, shopping trips where they can integrate with the community, trips to hairdresser; dentist; leisure facilities; restaurants; etc. Travel costs for the last year on bus hire amounted to £10,000 + £5,000 on residential travel. A new bus will make a world of difference to the school, especially with school budgets having been cut, the school is overwhelmed by the generosity of this money presented today.
President Kenny thanked Brian for the excellent amount raised, this is a great start to his fund-raising efforts this year.
