When Ken Rainey became President of The Rotary Club of Enniskillen in July 2015, he decided to support a charity known as The Literacy in a Box Trust whose primary objective is to advance education in schools, primarily, in Zambia, and also in the Philippines.

He made contact with local primary schools in Co Fermanagh seeking their support for this project and informing them of the need in the Philippines following his eldest son's visit to that country in August 2015. Andrew is a primary school teacher and was involved in mission work in various schools in the Philippines during his Summer break. During his visit to the Philippines he made contact with the Rotary Club of Antipolo Centro.

Primary schools in Co Fermanagh then started to respond and arrange fund raising events beginning in Autumn 2015. Harvest Services, a "Jumper Day" and film days were organised. Primary school children in the county were keen and willing to raise funds in order to help other school children by providing materials in the form of exercise books, pencils, pens, rulers, pencil cases and even back packs. The total raised by primary schools for the Philippines amounted to just over £4000 and a further £1280 was raised for schools in Zambia. This included Andrew's primary School in Antrim raising just over £900.

President Ken and a Past President of the Rotary Club, Ivan Kee, wrote to local businesses in order to increase the amount donated and in May 2016 £7000 in total was available for the Literacy Box project in the Philippines.

A decision was taken by all concerned in January 2016 to source the material for the schools in the Philippines and this involved The Rotary Club of Antipolo Centro and Child Evangelism Fellowship - Antipolo Chapter. In May 2016 the materials had been purchased and the packing began in order for distribution to take place.

Initially the intention was to support 400 children at one primary school in Penafrancia Elementary School Annex. As a result of the amount raised it was possible to help almost 700 children in six primary schools, in Antipolo City: Binayoyo Elementary School, Upper Kilingan Elementary School, San Ysiro Elementary School, Canumay Elementary School and Paglitao Elementary School.

The President of Antipolo Centro Rotary Club, Cristina Banario, described the project as "a heart warming experience". She said it has been an honour and a pleasure to be able to take part in a project that addresses a national problem while promoting proper and quality education". Andrew Rainey was able to visit three of the schools that received school supplies and he was guest speaker at a special Rotary Club meeting in Antipolo when he visited the country again in August 2016. He says that he was privileged to play a small part in the project and will always remember the smiles on the faces of Filippino children.

President Ken described the entire project as a real team effort. He expressed his thanks to all the schools and businesses who donated funds with the total amount raised being beyond his expectations. The help and support given by The Literacy in a Box Trust was invaluable. The material could not have been purchased and distributed so efficiently without the joint help from the Rotary Club of Antipolo Centro and Child Evangelism Fellowship in the Philippines. His son Andrew's involvement was an added and unexpected surprise and ultimately the school children and teachers who benefited were very grateful. Rotary's motto for the year was "Be a gift to the world" and this was a great example of Rotary making a real difference in the Philippines.
