On Thursday 24th October Rotarians took part in a street collection to raise funds for the End Polio Now campaign. Polio kills and paralyses young children, it spreads like wild fire, there is no cure but it can be easily prevented through immunisation. Rotary uses a purple Crocus to promote the cause, this is the colour of the dye that is put on the fingers of children to show that they have been immunised. Twenty five years ago polio struck 350,000 children each year, but now thanks to Rotary and others there were only 223 cases confirmed in2012. We are very close now to a polio free world.
Collections took place in the town centre and the local shopping centre. Total money raised to date £1,039.
