The Rotary Club of Enniskillen has chosen the RNLI as its official Charity to benefit from this year's 10K Run, and at our lunchtime meeting, on the 23rd May, an extremely interesting presentation was given to the Club by Peter Scott of the RNLI who gave us a resumee of the 10 year history of its service on Lough Erne.
He highlighted the fact that the RNLI has been in temporary accomodation at both of its boathouses, one at Lough Erne Yacht Club and the other at Carrybridge, since Enniskillen Lifeboat Station went "Live" in May 2001, but will now have permanent accomodation built at each base within the next two years, providing the crew with much needed facilities. As always, such infrastructure costs many hundreds of thousands of pounds and the RNLI would be grateful if anyone running in the 10K, without a personal charity, would sponsor the Enniskillen Life boat Station as their charity.
The RNLI has an Atlantic75 RIB (Rigid Inflateable Boat) and an RWC (Rescue Water Craft - a 70 mph Jetski) at each boathouse, serving the Lough Erne Navigation System. The RWCs were pioneered on Lough Erne by the Enniskillen Station and after a one year Pilot Scheme were adopted, in June 2010, by the RNLI over the British Isles and have been of great benefit in reaching "casualties" on the waterway quickly. Enniskillen Station has approximately 35 crew members and a management team of 5 lead by LOM (Lifeboat Operations Manager) David Robinson.
